Downtowns along the line

San Mateo County is a chain of cities, most of them with a walkable downtown near a Caltrain station: Burlingame Avenue, downtown San Mateo around B Street, Laurel Street in San Carlos, Courthouse Square in Redwood City, Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park. Each has its own restaurants, clinics, studios and shops, and residents move easily between them. Bay Area AEO's San Mateo page observes that with this much competition, AI assistants lean on specifics: signature dishes, atmosphere, insurance accepted, services offered and reviews that mention them.

The Peninsula also includes Daly City and South San Francisco to the north, with their own large communities and business districts, and Pacifica on the coast, whose questions often come from visitors heading to the beach and residents in its valley neighborhoods.

How many people ask

Bay Area AEO estimates that the Peninsula has about 748,000 residents and 602,000 adults, of whom about 295,000 use AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini, about 145,000 use one every day, and about 361,000 read Google's AI Overviews. The table gives the same estimates city by city. Estimates published by Bay Area AEO according to Pew Research (June 2026); population from the California Department of Finance (January 2026); adult share from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

Commuters and residents

Many Peninsula customers commute, by Caltrain or along 101 and 280, and ask questions tied to that rhythm: dinner near the station, a gym that opens early, a dentist with evening hours, catering for an office in Redwood Shores or South San Francisco. Businesses near stations and office districts should state their distance from the station and their early and late hours plainly, and keep the hours identical on every listing.

Practices and professionals

The Peninsula has a large share of the region's medical, dental and wellness practices, and of its financial and legal professionals, many of them serving clients with high expectations and detailed questions. Bay Area AEO's sample questions point the same way: a dentist in San Mateo who is good with anxious patients and takes Delta Dental, a deep tissue massage in Redwood City for shoulder tension, a fee-only financial planner in San Mateo who works with tech employees, a therapist in San Mateo who specializes in anxiety and takes Blue Shield. Each one carries a condition the practice can state on its website and directory profiles, and the practices that state them plainly are the ones an assistant can recommend with confidence.

Where to start on the Peninsula

Because Peninsula downtowns sit so close together, the assistant's choice often comes down to which business it can describe most precisely. Start with the specifics Bay Area AEO's San Mateo page lists: signature dishes or services named everywhere, the atmosphere described in the business's own words, insurance accepted stated plainly, and reviews that mention them. Then name the downtown and station, and build mentions in the local papers and guides that cover each city.

Say which station you are near

If your business is within walking distance of a Caltrain or BART station, say so in your website's first paragraph and in your listing descriptions. Many Peninsula questions are asked on the way home.
